pivot! the podcast S1 Ep 6
Not got time to listen? Read the transcript, it’s so interesting.
A personal note: my word for 2024 was “commitment.” The one commitment I didn’t want to renege on in my business was a fortnightly podcast ypload, but the germs beat me. And that’s ok: because my commitment to my healthy, my family, and well - me - is even greater. If you’ve been struggling to be “consistent” amidst a busy world, know you’re not alone, and that doing your best is more than good enough.
Well this was a treat.
Have you ever wanted to ask a composer, artist or maker “but how did you make THAT from nothing"?!” Me too. So I did. From playing trumpet in a brass band in a small town in Yorkshire as a boy, to winning an Emmy alongside fellow composer David Arnold for Sherlock (via the dole and ballet classes) Michael's musical and life experiences made for such a wonderful chat.
The conversation delves deep into the concept of self-identification as a composer, where I think you’ll be really surprised by the results. Through candid reflections, Michael discusses the perception of talent, the evolution of his career, and the significance of mentorship.
Amidst discussions about creativity, resilience, and the changing landscape of the music industry, this episode is packed with wisdom and insights that will resonate with anyone navigating through their own pivots in life and work.
I am so lucky that I get to have these ramble-chats (with thanks to Adam Buxton for that expression) with these extraordinary people. I hope you love this one as much as I did, and don’t forget to catch up with previous episodes from gems including
Suzy Reading, Lia Leendertz, Grace Davidson and many more!
You can check out Michael’s website here or join him over on Instagram. I love to hang out on Instagram: let’s make friends on my Instagram page!
